Back in November, a good friend of mine asked me if I found joy every day. That simple question really made me think about my daily routine and put things in perspective. Since shelter-at-home took place, I have felt like a robot. I do the same things every day: work, eat, watch tv, sleep, repeat. (And throughout the day, I stress out and have anxiety that keeps me up).
From the unexpected events last year brought to the battles we continue to fight; and the demands we need to meet every day, finding joy during these times can be difficult. If finding joy has been hard for you, here are 10 ways to find joy in these tough times.
Do What Makes You Happy
With a day filled with work, responsibilities, etc., remember to make time for the things that make you happy. Whether that be cooking, watching tv or your favorite movie, reading, painting, meditating– whatever makes you happy, do it.
Go For A Walk
Go for a walk, even if it’s just around the block. Getting fresh air can make you healthier and happier. If you’re not able to go outside, try looking at outdoor photos, like national parks, beaches, mountains, or places you would like to visit in the future. Visual pleasures can ease and lighten up your mind.
Treat Yourself
Grab a drink at your favorite cafe or take-out at your favorite restaurant. Take a stroll through the park or go to a nice spot you know has beautiful scenery. Buy yourself flowers the next time you’re at the grocery store. Maybe your idea of a perfect date is staying in to run a relaxing bath. Whatever it is, you deserve to treat yourself!
Talk To Your Loved Ones
The pandemic has affected our connection with others. We have to nurture those relationships no matter how independent or introverted we are. Text, Facetime, call, or tag people in funny memes and videos. If possible, meet up for a socially distanced hello. Social connection feeds our souls physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Make it a priority.
Take One Action Towards Your Goals
It’s overwhelming to have a long to-do list and have little to no motivation at all to complete it all. By completing at least one task off your to-do list and taking one step towards your goals can make a difference in how you feel. Getting out of bed to work on a project can make you feel more accomplished and fill you with joy.
Workout
I know many of us are struggling to get up and workout. We understand the amazing benefits of exercise: self-esteem, better sleep, happy hormones, and more. It hasn’t been easy, but let us be the ones to tell you that the initial dread of finally starting is well worth overcoming. Find what’s best for you to get moving at home, in the gym, or outside. And remember, do not fall into comparing yourself to others!
Enjoy The Little Things
Enjoy the little things in life. Such as indulging in your favorite food, soaking up the sun, or jamming out to your favorite song. Anything that awakens your soul will give you feelings of joy. It’s the little things in life that can make a big difference.
Change Your Routine
If you feel stuck in a rut, change up your routine. Learn something new, get fresh air, eat something new during your meals. Add something new to your day that will add excitement and joy to your life.
Redecorate Your Home
Are the things around your home bringing you joy? Redecorating different parts of your home like adding a picture frame, candle, plant, or blanket can make a difference in vamping up your home. We are spending so much time indoors, so make your home feel as comforting and cozy as possible.
Stay In The Present
It can be challenging trying not to think about the future, or even being in the present. Remind yourself to take life one day at a time. Don’t overwhelm yourself by worrying about the future and the unknown. Take deep breaths and allow yourself to stay in the present.
Every day is different and our emotions and state-of-mind changes, but joy speaks from inside of us. We hope that at least one of these things can help you find joy during these tough times.
